The Art of Self Promotion…..or in my case, a lack thereof!!

We are very lucky people.  Not only is there a craft brewery in the family, but there’s a craft brewery in the family that is doing extremely well.  So well in fact that they were asked to provide the beer for the recent AACTA awards.

Now this is not the Logies.  This is the Australian version of the Academy Awards.  This is the big time and not only did they get to provide the beer, they also got to attend with eight of their closest friends and family and we were lucky enough to be included.  Fancy that!  Little old me and my Husband strolling the red carpet, swanning amongst the stars, and actually getting close enough to the BIG stars to accidentally bump into them!

I will admit, I was completely star struck – Baz Luhrmann, David Wenham, Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Jackie Weaver and Jack Thompson, just to name a few.  I was in TV Week heaven.  It took every ounce of my being not to hug and kiss and fawn all over them……

“Stay cool Em, stay cool” was my mantra for the evening.

Then an opportunity presented itself at the after party; a fantastic opportunity to promote myself to a key personality in the food industry.  Matt Preston from Australian Masterchef was right beside me.  Hubby nudged me with his elbow and I timidly asked if I could get a photo with him.  I had a Burleigh Brewing Company 28 Pale Ale in one hand and my handbag in the other, loaded with business cards for my food blog.

For the first time in my life I became shy… I froze, then proceeded to rabbit on (which was my job for the evening) about how wonderful the beer was (which it is). I did not even mention the fact I had a moderately successful food blog with over 13,000 followers on Facebook, a rapidly growing Twitter following and a weekly post on contentgroup’s website.

I totally missed the opportunity! I could have kicked myself!

So the Art of Self Promotion really comes down to seizing the opportunity, grabbing life by the ‘you-know-whats’…

And don’t be afraid if it doesn’t get you anywhere there and then.  Persistence is the key.

Such was my regret that I didn’t promote myself and my passion, I decided I should do something about it.

So I just posted that photo on Twitter and tagged Matt Preston.

I captioned it “Lucky you Matt Preston!  You had your photo taken with me!”

We’ll see if that works….You just never know.

Cheers and Happy Self Promoting,

Em

P.S.  I couldn’t write this post without promoting Australia’s best beer……check it out at: burleighbrewing.com.au/
